Venetian Walls of Nicosia

The Venetian Walls of Nicosia form a remarkable star-shaped fortification encircling the old city, built between 1567 and 1570 by the Venetians in a desperate attempt to defend against the anticipated Ottoman invasion. The walls feature eleven heart-shaped bastions and three gates, and were designed by the military engineer Giulio Savorgnan. Despite the massive engineering effort, the walls fell to the Ottomans after just 48 days of siege in 1570.
Today, the walls remain one of the best-preserved examples of Venetian military architecture in the eastern Mediterranean. Several bastions have been converted into cultural venues, parks, and exhibition spaces. The Kyrenia Gate, Famagusta Gate (in south Nicosia), and Paphos Gate provide entry points to the old city. Walking along sections of the walls offers elevated views of the historic city and its minarets.
