⭐ 4.3 / 5.0
The Church of Antiphonitis is a remarkable 12th-century Byzantine church nestled in the forested slopes of the Kyrenia mountains, approximately 12 km south of Esentepe. It is one of the finest surviving examples of Byzantine ecclesiastical architecture in North Cyprus, featuring a distinctive octagonal dome supported by eight arches — unique in Cypriot church design. The interior retains fragments of exquisite 12th to 15th-century frescoes depicting biblical scenes.

Set in a peaceful mountain clearing surrounded by pine and carob trees, the church offers a tranquil escape from the coastal bustle. The site is modest in scale but rich in atmosphere and historical significance. Access is via a winding mountain road that adds to the sense of discovery. Restoration work has helped preserve the remaining frescoes, which include a striking depiction of the Tree of Jesse.
