Sourp Magar (St. Macarius) is a historic Armenian monastery hidden in the pine forests of the Kyrenia mountains, dating back to the early medieval period with significant 15th-century additions. Once a vital centre of Armenian monastic life in Cyprus, the monastery served as a refuge, a centre of learning, and later a summer retreat for Armenians from Nicosia. Its remote mountain setting at around 500 metres elevation gives it a contemplative atmosphere.
The partially ruined complex includes a church, refectory, and living quarters arranged around a courtyard. Carved Armenian inscriptions and architectural details remain visible in the stonework. The site is reached via a forest track and rewards visitors with both historical interest and beautiful natural surroundings, including sweeping views through the pine canopy.
