Enkomi (also known as Alasia) is one of the most important Bronze Age archaeological sites in the eastern Mediterranean, located near Tuzla village west of Famagusta. Dating from approximately 2000 to 1050 BC, this ancient city was once a major copper-trading centre and is believed by many scholars to be the ancient kingdom of Alasia mentioned in Egyptian and Hittite diplomatic correspondence. The site was systematically excavated by French and Cypriot archaeologists throughout the 20th century.
The well-preserved street grid, cyclopean walls, and building foundations give a vivid picture of a wealthy Bronze Age city. Notable finds include the famous 'Horned God' bronze statue (now in the Cyprus Museum), Mycenaean pottery, and evidence of sophisticated metalworking. The site is modest in visual impact compared to Salamis but is archaeologically significant and usually uncrowded, offering a contemplative experience.
