Buffavento Castle, meaning "buffeted by winds", is the highest of the three Crusader-era castles perched along the Kyrenia mountain range at an elevation of approximately 940 metres. Built by the Byzantines as a watchtower and later fortified by the Lusignans in the 12th century, this dramatic ruin offers some of the most spectacular panoramic views in all of Cyprus, stretching from Kyrenia harbour to the Mesaoria plain and, on clear days, across to the Turkish mainland.
The steep climb to the castle takes about 30–40 minutes from the car park along a rocky path, passing through fragrant pine forest and wild herb-scented scrubland. The ruins are divided into upper and lower wards connected by a stairway cut into the rock. While less restored than St. Hilarion, Buffavento's isolation and dramatic setting make it a favourite for hikers and history enthusiasts seeking a more adventurous castle experience.
