Gazimağusa City Walls

The City Walls of Famagusta (Gazimağusa) are among the best-preserved Venetian fortifications in the world, encircling the old city in a massive circuit of stone ramparts, bastions, and sea walls. Built between the 15th and 16th centuries, the walls were designed to withstand the most powerful artillery of the era. They were famously tested during the Ottoman siege of 1570–1571, one of the most brutal sieges in history, when the Venetian garrison under Marcantonio Bragadin held out for almost a year.

Walking along sections of the ramparts offers dramatic views over the old city's medieval skyline, the modern city beyond, and the harbour. Key points of interest include the Land Gate (Akkule), the Ravelin bastion, the Sea Gate, and the Othello Tower. The walls create a defined boundary for the atmospheric old city, within which Gothic churches, mosques, Ottoman baths, and medieval ruins create one of the most evocative urban landscapes in the Mediterranean.
