Büyük Han (literally "Great Inn") is the largest and finest caravanserai in Cyprus, and one of the most significant examples of Ottoman civic architecture in the Eastern Mediterranean. Located in the heart of the walled city of Nicosia (Lefkoşa), within the northern sector of the capital, it stands as a magnificent testament to the Ottoman Empire's architectural legacy on the island. Built in 1572, just one year after the Ottoman conquest of Cyprus, it was commissioned by the first Ottoman governor of Cyprus, Muzaffer Pasha, to serve as a resting place for travelling merchants and their caravans.
The han follows the classic Ottoman caravanserai design: a two-storey rectangular structure built around a spacious central courtyard measuring approximately 50 by 35 metres. The courtyard features a small octagonal mosque (mescit) raised on columns at its centre — a distinctive architectural element that sets it apart from other hans in the region. The building contains 68 rooms on the upper floor, originally used as guest chambers, and an equal number of stables and storage rooms on the ground floor. The main entrance is through an imposing arched gateway on the northern side, flanked by pointed-arch arcades that run along both levels.
Throughout its nearly five centuries of existence, Büyük Han has served many purposes. Following its original function as a caravanserai, it was used as a prison during the British colonial period (1878–1960) and later fell into disrepair. A major restoration project was undertaken between 1992 and 2002 by the Department of Antiquities, painstakingly restoring the structure to its former glory while adapting it for modern use. The restoration is widely regarded as one of the most successful heritage conservation projects in the region.
Today, Büyük Han operates as a thriving cultural and artisan centre. Its ground-floor rooms house craft workshops, art galleries, souvenir shops, and traditional handcraft studios where visitors can watch artisans at work. The upper floor contains additional galleries and a popular courtyard café, which is frequently cited as one of the best places for coffee in Nicosia. The atmospheric courtyard, with its ancient stone walls and dappled shade, provides a peaceful escape from the bustling streets of the old city.
Visitors should plan to spend at least 30-45 minutes exploring the han, though those interested in shopping or lingering over coffee could easily spend longer. The best time to visit is mid-morning or late afternoon when the light illuminates the golden sandstone walls beautifully. The han is conveniently located within walking distance of other key landmarks including Selimiye Mosque (formerly the Cathedral of Saint Sophia), Büyük Hamam (the Great Bath), and the Bedesten covered market.
