Bandabulya Market (Belediye Pazarı) is the historic covered market of North Nicosia, located in the heart of the old walled city near the Selimiye Mosque. This vibrant marketplace has served as the commercial and social centre of the city for generations, offering an authentic glimpse into the daily life and culinary traditions of Northern Cyprus. Recently renovated while preserving its Ottoman-era character, Bandabulya stands as both a functioning market and a cultural landmark.

The market building dates to the late Ottoman period, originally constructed as an open-air bazaar before receiving its distinctive covered roof structure. The name "Bandabulya" derives from the Italian "Banco di Glia" or possibly from a corruption of "ban de bula," reflecting the cosmopolitan linguistic heritage of Nicosia's trading quarter. The building underwent a significant restoration in the 2010s, transforming it from a declining traditional market into a modern food hall while carefully maintaining its architectural heritage — arched stone entrances, high ceilings, and the atmospheric interplay of light and shadow that characterizes Ottoman commercial architecture.

Inside, visitors discover a curated selection of stalls offering traditional Cypriot produce and prepared foods. Fresh halloumi cheese (hellim), cured meats such as pastırma, locally pressed olive oil, dried herbs, spices, and traditional sweets like şamali and lokma are among the specialties. Several café-restaurants within the market serve freshly prepared Cypriot dishes, making it an excellent spot for lunch. The market also hosts occasional cultural events, live music, and seasonal festivals that bring together locals and tourists alike.

Bandabulya is ideally visited as part of a walking tour of old Nicosia's walled city. The Selimiye Mosque (formerly the Cathedral of Saint Sophia, built 1209–1326) is just steps away, as are the Büyük Han, the Kumarcilar Han, and the picturesque Arabahmet Quarter. The market is busiest and most atmospheric on weekend mornings.
